When you take a bucket list trip like Greece, I think it is important to take some time to reflect back on your travels. These are just some of my thoughts as I reflect our adventure from the Athens airport. I will never forget this trip and the countless memories we have made. Each tour, meal, city stroll, and excursion made way for good conversation, laughs, and sweet moments. I have learned new things, met some amazing people, and strengthened friendships. Maybe it is just me but this trip made me want to take twenty more.
As I looked out upon Athens, the lights sparkled and for some reason it was more beautiful than any other night. The picturesque mountains stuck up above the city below. Thousands of tiny buildings that 5 million people call home, were lit up for miles.
Throughout this trip I have thought a little bit about why I love to travel so much. The truth is, I cannot really point to a single reason, but a lot of it is because of people. When you go some where new, the people you interact with are what make it special. I don’t necessarily mean each random person you talk too, but rather the ones which make the trip ten times more special. Those friends who are like family, the tour guide with a deep passion for their country, or local that gives you tips for the best experience just because. It is a way to create life long memories with friends and family. You will meet some of the most interesting people from different cultures that make a love a place even more. For me, this was Jenny, our tour guide throughout the trip.
I think traveling is also an escape in a way. A new place with all new experiences and people has a way of stopping time. Strolls around the city, visiting famous landmarks, good laughs and conversations are what makes it so fun. In doing those things, we gain different perspectives and learn things we never knew. When you do as much as we have in this trip, twelve days feels like two, but also like four months.
Every place is so different in it its own way. The world is a lot bigger than the Untied States. This trip has truly opened my eyes to the importance of immersing yourself in different cultures of the world to understand what makes our our country so special. There are things to admire about every place you visit. For example, the thing I love most about Greece is the slower pace of life.
Activities like dining are things that should be savored and enjoyed. Fast food is here but definitely not common. When you do eat out, it could be two hours before you get the check, if you do not ask.
Greece will always hold a special place in my heart. It’s where my eyes were opened to the value of international travel. I think it is possible to find things you love in every country… and things you do not. My friends and I have shared laughs and memories that we will cherish for year to come. Sure, you can do that anywhere but there is something special about doing it in Greece. I am so grateful for the for the efforts of Dr. Carden to make this happen and my parent’s willingness to pay for this amazing experience. Thank you to the sweetest friends for making this trip such a blessing to me. I love each of you so much!! I cannot wait to see what God has in store for each of our lives.
I hope it is not too long before I make it back to this beautiful place.
Here’s to a lifetime of adventure!
Until next trip.
