To be honest I do not really know when our day started. One thing I do know is that we were on an airplane. We left from Atlanta yesterday around 11:00 PM and embarked on our journey to Greece. I am writing this about five hours in to our first flight. By this time, we have eaten our meal which consisted of a baked chicken dish with potatoes, broccoli and carrots. Along with smoked salmon, a Turkish dish that was kind of like a spread or slaw, bread, and a brownie. Considering the meal was served at 10,000 feet in the sky, it was pretty good. After we ate I watched a movie or two, talked to my friends and took a nap. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with Turkish Airlines. The flight attendants were very kind, seats were fairly comfortable and the food wasn’t bad either.
After another five hours, it was time to begin our descent to Istanbul, Turkey. Once our plane landed, we headed to our next gate and grabbed a couple of waters. The airport was very clean and modern.
Before we knew it, it was time for the final stretch- Istanbul to Athens, but this time it was only an hour or so long. So, it was nothing compared to the first one. Just enough time to take nap, drink cup of coffee, and listen to music.
I don’t think I have ever been more happy to breathe outside air. Once in Athens, we deplaned and took a short shuttle to customs and the baggage claim. It was pretty cool to get my first passport stamp in Athen, Greece!
Once everyone had their bags, we met up with our tour guide -who was so sweet and funny- and took a 45 minute charter bus to our hotel where we will be staying for the next two nights. We checked in and took our bags up to the room before heading up to the rooftop restaurant to grab a quick dinner. We enjoyed a delicious Greek meal and while looking out at the Acropolis. My mom got a dish called Mousaka, which is mix of roasted vegetables, a meat, and cheese put together kind of like lasagna. I had Kousavaki, which consisted of grilled chicken and peppers on a skewer, served with cheese-filled pita bits, and a lemon basil sauce. The view was stunning, the iconic ruin of Athen’s nestled on a mountain-like hill, shining like a beacon in the night. To the left, you could also see Lybacticus Hill, a famous viewpoint in Athens.
Even though it was a VERY long day (30 Hours), it is already so worth it. Tomorrow we embark on our Athen’s city tour, to see sites like Acropolis.
